Things to know:
  • Rotary blade required
  • Strong grip mat or transfer tape on mat
  • rotary cutter works best with sharp, straight lines if tiny
  • you can put multiple colors of felt on a mat at a time
  • default pressure (too deep cuts mat)
  • make sure felt is brayed flat to mat
 

Materials

  • Felt
  • Rotary cutting blade (have a STEAM Team member/educator switch this out for you)
  • Strong grip cutting mat
  • Transfer tape
  • Brayer
  • Scissors
 

Making a Felt Garland

Preparing your workspace

Step 1: Gather materials.

Step 2: Cut a mat-size square of transfer tape and apply it sticky side up on the cutting mat. Remove excess.

Step 3: Cut your felt to mat size You can put 2+ colors of felt on the mat, but make sure your cricut design takes into account the spacing of your felt

Step 4: Apply felt to the mat and use the brayer to completely flatten the felt to the mat

Sending your design to print

Step 5: Finalize the design on cricut design space
  • Attach all elements
  • If you wanna import your own image click here

Similar to vinyl, make sure your design is one color and relatively simple shapes
Step 6: Click make and check that your mat is the same size as in your settings under material size
 
Step 7: Connect your laptop to the cricut and select Maker 3: 0USB

Step 8: Set your material as felt

Step 9: Set your pressure to ‘light’
 
Step 10: Select ‘Edit Tools’ and change settings from fine point blade to rotary blade

Step 11: Feed your mat into the machine
Step 12: Send to cut

Step 13: Watch your cut/remove when finished

Step 14: Peel off excess felt + transfer tape, then remove your pieces

Assembling your garland

Step 15: Take your upholstery needle and thread it with a full skein of embroidery thread

Step 16: Sew the needle through 2 adjacent parts of your felt piece so that the thread leaves the felt piece on the same side it goes through the first time

Step 17: Continue sewing until you have a fully threaded garland
Step 18: Space out your pieces and enjoy!

Maintenance consideration: The rotary blade may become dirty with felt build up
